Register Now! – 4th Annual Judicial Education Conference

Registration is now open for our 4th Annual Judicial Education Conference.  This year our annual conference, entitled "Crimes, Gangs, Rights, Due Process and the CJP," will be at the Doubletree Spectrum Hotel in Irvine.  This is a first-class venue in the heart of Orange County.  Space this year will be limited, so don't delay!  Here’s the schedule:

You are cordially invited to join us Friday evening, October 7, for the Directors' Reception, a festive welcome on the Terrace.  Dinner is on your own.  We recommend the Spectrum, Orange County’s premier venue for dining, shopping and entertainment, located adjacent to the hotel.  Later that evening, you are welcome to relax under the stars and enjoy our Spirits and Cigars Night on what we now affectionately call "The Judge Lance Ito Terrace."

Classes begin Saturday morning, October 8.  We will learn from the best of the best!  Over the course of two days, we will cover a range of criminal justice issues, including the impact of Prop 47, updates on Fourth and Fifth Amendment Jurisprudence, and the current state of the law regarding expert testimony and sentencing in gang cases.  We will enjoy a wonderful lunch on the Terrace.  Guests are welcome to attend.

Keynote Speaker – Robert Shapiro

Following a cocktail reception on the Terrace after classes on Saturday, we will enjoy a sumptuous dinner, after which Robert Shapiro will deliver the keynote address.  Mr. Shapiro, a renowned litigator, is a senior partner at Los Angeles-based Glaser Weil Fink Jacobs Howard Avchen & Shapiro, LLP.  With a reputation as a zealous advocate, he has represented clients ranging from high-profile corporations to celebrities. Mr. Shapiro has more than 30 years of criminal litigation practice, including the successful defenses of O.J. Simpson and Christian Brando.

A 1965 graduate of UCLA, Mr. Shapiro received his law degree from Loyola Law School in 1968.  At the start of his career, Mr. Shapiro spent two years in the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office before beginning his storied career in criminal defense, where he polished his trial experience and honed his litigation expertise.  Shortly after the Simpson trial, he moved from criminal defense into the civil arena. Today, Mr. Shapiro is recognized as a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by the National Trial Lawyers Association.  An entrepreneur at heart, he is the founder of LegalZoom.com.

Mr. Shapiro will be introduced to dinner guests by the Honorable Judge Lance Ito.  Another after-hours evening on the Terrace will follow, with Judge Ito and Mr. Shapiro joining us for a relaxed off-the-record night of conversation.

Classes resume on Sunday morning, October 9, when we will delve into the legal structure of the CJP and what many judges now perceive to be a denial of fundamental due process rights.  Several judges, as well as members of the judicial defense bar, will participate.  Among other things, we will discuss proposals to safeguard confidentiality—including protecting the ability to waive it—while making the process more transparent.

Since Monday, October 10, is a court holiday, we encourage you to relax Sunday afternoon, enjoy everything that Orange County has to offer, and return home at your leisure on Monday.

The cost for this year’s conference is only $95.  That price includes class materials, lunch and dinner on Saturday.   Guests are welcome to join us for lunch and dinner on Saturday, at our cost: Lunch is $30, and dinner is $60.  To register, click here to go to our website, or go to www.allianceofcaliforniajudges.com  Go to the “Donation” page, toggle “One Time,” and use our fully secure Pay Pal account to pay the conference fee and a guest fee.  If you prefer, send a check payable to the Alliance of California Judges at 1817 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento, CA  95811.
